Dalit scholar Rohit Vemula committed
suicide yesterday after he was suspended along with four other research
scholars of Ambedkar Students Association (ASA) in the case of assault
of a ABVP student leader. He was found hanging at 7.30 PM on Sunday
using blue banner of ASA and suicide note was recovered from the room.
Scuffle broke out after ASA protested against ABVP’s attack on screening of the documentary, Muzzafarnagar Baqi Hai, at Delhi University on Aug 3,2015. ASA started protesting accusing VC P. Appa Rao and Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya forcing Rohit to commit suicide. Even as his Rohit's family members asked poltical parties and politicians not to do politics, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi already met them in the University Campus and demanded sacking of University Vice Chancellor and Union Ministers Bandaru Dattatreya, Smriti Irani.
Mamata Bannerjee's TMC is rushing in Derek Obrein to meet the students in the university. Kejriwal's AAP organised protests in front of Smriti Irani's house in Delhi and Kejriwal called it as a murder. Mulayam Singh's SP, Nitish Kumar's JDU is also rushing in their leaders. KCR's TRS leaders, Jagan Mohan Reddy's YSRCP too condemned the suicide.
Kishan Reddy,state BJP leader asked political parties not to politicise the issue and questioned where was Rahul Gandhi when Rohit and his friends thrashed another student Sushil on Aug 3 and why he didnot console him though he was still in hospital. He lamented that politicians are diverting the case without knowing the facts. He questioned why did Rahul Gandhi not come to console the dalits who were killed in Congress leader Sirisilla Rajaiah's house.
