Hyderabad may be broken into 4 districts: Minister

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad district is expected to become smaller with three additional districts to be carved out from it. In all, what is now Greater Hyderabad will have four districts including Hyderabad.

"There is a proposal to split Greater Hyderabad into four revenue districts as it covers a vast area and also 24 assembly constituencies. Secunderabad will definitely be one among the new districts," T Padma Rao, minister for excise and Secunderabad MLA, told TOI on Monday.

The proposal of new districts for Greater Hyderabad is being considered as the GHMC is spread over 625 sq km and people face hardships reaching the Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy district collectorates for various purposes, according to officials. Secondly, Ranga Reddy district suffers from a geographical disadvantage as it surrounds Hyderabad. Thirdly, there is a demand for a separate district for Secunderabad and other areas like Vikarabad. As of now, most of Greater Hyderabad area falls under Hyderabad district, while some parts are in Ranga Reddy, some other areas fall in Medak.

Creation of smaller districts creates administrative convenience, and, for the people, it will mean ease of travel when the need to visit the district HQ arises. As of now, each district collector monitors more than 50 departments in the district. However, on the flip side, creation of the new districts is an expensive affair as it leads to additional logistics and infrastructure.

Once Hyderabad is divided into four districts, the Ranga Reddy district will be confined to only some parts like Vikarabad and Tandur. The state government may also consider merging some of the areas from Ranga Reddy and Medak districts.

Areas in the eastern part of Ranga Reddy, such as Uppal, Boduppal and Ghatkesar, are likely to be merged in a new district. Similarly, Alwal, Malkajgiri and Shamirpet, Kukatpally, Quaubullapur and Medchal would become part of a new district. The existing Hyderabad district is likely to be retained — with Old City and some parts of Ranga Reddy areas such as Rajendranagar and L B Nagar. The government may also consider a separate district for Cyberabad — with Serilingampally, Chevella, Manikonda, Shamshabad in Ranga Reddy and Patancheru in Medak.

Interestingly, the demand for separate district for Secunderabad began with the government setting up a committee headed by chief secretary Rajiv Sharma to look into the new districts issue. The Jai Secunderabad Jilla Akanksha Committee, formed by some leaders and eminent people from Secunderabad, met excise minister T Padma Rao and sought his support for the new district.

"Secunderabad was a separate municipal corporation till mid 1960s. It was merged with Hyderabad Corporation and the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad was formed. Development has come to a standstill and the areas lost their glory after the shifting of the airport to Shamshabad. The government is also not giving any priority to Secunderabad, compared what it gives to Hyderabad across the Tank Bund," said Naguluri Krishna Kumar Goud, an advocate.
