AP to Irrigate 15 Lakh Acre Drought Areas?

By getting a fresh quantity of 150 to 200 TMC feet water into its agriculture system, the Andhra Pradesh irrigation department is gearing up for stabilizing neary 15 lakh acres ayacut that is currently prone to regular severe drought spells.

This is reportedly being done by inter linking of  Krishna, Godavari and Penna rivers in AP which can provide irrigation facilities for nearly 14 lakh acres of land. The vision document of irrigation department proposes the utilization of nearly 3000 TMC feet water.

This is from the river Godavari flowing into the sea which would be tapped by diverting it to thousands of tanks reportedly abandoned over the lack of regular supplies.

The massive program would solve the perennial drought conditions faced by the five coastal and four Rayalaseema districts namely Srikakulam, Guntur, Prakasam, Vizainagaram, Visakhapatnam, Chittoor, Kadapa, Kurnool and Anantapur. The linking of all the major rivers, Godavari Krishna and Krishna Penna, are currently underway which would be adding around 200 TMC feet water to the irrigation system.
