Already facing an alarming water crisis, the Telangana government's
hopes to get more allocation of water from river Krishna was dashed
yesterday when the Centre had refused in reviewing the existing
allocation to the Telugu states.
The Union
government, submitted an affidavit to the Supreme Court, where it had
said that the review of water allocations will be now limited to Andhra
Pradesh and Telangana only, even as Maharashtra and Karnataka would be
excluded it. Telangana carved from Andhra Pradesh on June 2, 2014,
wanted to be considered as a separate entity separate from the parent
state.
This pertains to the distribution of
Krishna water among all the stake holder states seeking a fresh
determination of its allocations and share in Krishna water. This stand
taken by the Centre will severely affect the ongoing and also proposed
irrigation projects in Telangana such as Koilsagar and
Palamuru-Rangareddy projects, proposed Jurala-Pakala and Nakkalagandi
Lift Irrigation Scheme.
The Krishna Water
Disputes Tribunal (KWDT-II) had earlier allocated 299 TMC feet of water
to the region of Telangana and 512 TMC feet to the region of Andhra
Pradesh. The latest decision has upset India's youngest state which had
been demanding more water for the proposed mega irrigation projects.
